Dümmen Orange is the world’s largest breeder and propagator of cut flowers, bulbs, tropical plants, pot plants, bedding plants and perennials. For our Research & Development department in De Lier we are looking for a Team Lead Phytopathology.

Job objective
Our organization grows and flourishes. This results in a fast-changing and, therefore, challenging environment. Currently, Technology Application and Technology Development are combined in a single team within the Dümmen Orange phytopathology department. To allow the expansion of both activities, two separate teams will be created. As Team Lead Phytopathology you focus on the Technology Applications service department of phytopathology, making sure that developed phytopathology bio-assays are used to improve the global Dümmen Orange breeding programs for resistance traits. Your tasks are to evaluate the performance of the trials, optimize bio-assay efficiency, determine and report on Key Performance Indicators, implement software systems for track-and-trace of the bio-assays and develop a strategy for the long-term activities within Phytopathology Technology Applications. The activities are a dynamic mix of hands-on activities in the greenhouse, guiding the team members in their tasks, communicating with internal and external service providers and aligning with internal stakeholders from Breeding and Technology Development. In the first period you will report to the Research Director in De Lier and later on to the Global Lead Technology Applications.

Your tasks and responsibilities
•    Create the Phytopathology Technology Applications year planning and follow up communication with stakeholders.
•    Plan, organize, execute, collect, analyze and report results of all Phytopathology Technology Applications activities.
•    Lead the team and participate yourself in the execution of bio-assays.
•    Guarantee constant improvement and critical review of currently used methods.
•    Formulate and implement processes, procedures, and measures to achieve business objectives and meet defined Quality Assurance standards.
•    Maintain detailed documentation of performed activities and communicate with internal and external stakeholders to make sure people are informed and activities run according to plan.
•    Provide transparent business reports on progress.

Your profile
•    PhD (or MSc degree with work experience) in phytopathology or related area.
•    Hands-on approach with experience in conducting large scale experiments.
•    Capable of managing a small team of people.
•    Excellent organization skills, critical thinking mindset, creative, eye for details and wish to strive for constant improvements.
•    Affinity with plant biology and plant breeding.
•    Energetic and proactive attitude with excellent interpersonal communication skills.
•    Very good data analysis and interpretation skills, using statistical programs (such as R) for experimental design and reporting purposes.
•    Ability to work independently as well as in fast-paced multidisciplinary teams.
•    Drive for improvements and motivated by rapidly changing organizations.
•    Excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written. Dutch is a plus.
